STRONG EARTQUAKE

Albania's death toll rises to 25

At least 25 people have been killed and over 600 more injured after Albania was rocked by its strongest earthquake in decades, according to authorities, though many expect the number to increase.

The magnitude-6.4 earthquake, which was the strongest of several quakes to hit the country's western region on Tuesday morning, left a number of people trapped beneath the rubble of collapsed buildings.

Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama visited rescue sites after the earthquake which was followed by 250 aftershocks. The government declared November 27 a day of national mourning and schools will be suspended.

Many Albanians who lost their homes slept in the 300 tents laid out in sports fields and stadiums. Gyms were also adapted to accommodate people.

The Ministry of Defence said the whole country was standing by the search and rescue teams, including at least 2,000 armed forces personnel and 1,900 state police officers.

Emergency experts from Italy, Greece, France, Turkey, Croatia, Kosovo, Montenegro and Romania were helping with the effort, the ministry added, and the United States was assisting through its regional office.
