ISA MUSTAFA SAID

Kurti has five days to form a government

The leader of the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) Isa Mustafa gave the Vetevendosje Movement the weekend as the deadline for the governing agreement.

Following the LDK leadership meeting this afternoon, Mustafa said AlbinKurti had until the end of the week to accept the agreement or announce its failure.

The LDK President said that the Kosovo government should be balanced as citizens believed in their vote on 6 October 2019.

“We are ready to sit down and talk and reach an agreement by the end of this week, or conclude that there are no conditions for an agreement.”

On Monday, President HashimThaci mandated the leader of the Vetevendosje Movement AlbinKurti to form the government. He has two more weeks to secure the numbers needed for a vote of confidence in parliament.

Thaci wrote a letter on Friday to Kurti asking him to act quickly or “make way” for others to form a government, as Kurti is struggling to form a coalition government, despite ongoing talks with the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK).

Thaci asked Kurti to inform him whether the Vetevendosje is ready to propose a name for Prime Minister or reject the mandate to form a government, in order, as Thaci says in his letter, “to proceed with giving the mandate to someone else”, alluding to Constitutional Courts decision.

Kurti, has responded to the country’s president asking him not to influence and impose the creation of the government, adding that the country’s constitution recognizes neither the president’s discretion nor an active role in creating the mandate, but added that the president must do so in a neutral way.

The Vetevendosje, despite winning the elections lacks the majority to form a new government and is negotiating a potential coalition with the LDK but after three months of negotiations the two parties have not reached an agreement on the sharing of powers in a possible coalition Government
