Mini Schengen is not a plan B for the Western Balkans

The idea of an inclusive regional Schengen and cooperation among the six Western Balkan countries, based on the four freedoms of the European Union, is not a replacement but the best way to prepare for EU accession, said Albanian Prime Minister Eddie Rama.

In the op-ed text to EURACTIV.com, Rama stated that the European Commission will host an international donor conference for Albania on Monday to raise funds for the country's reconstruction after the November earthquake.

He reiterated that the EU, after a swift response to the post-earthquake emergency, is responding generously to assist a country facing serious reconstruction tasks.

He also said that this is not only about reconstruction and rebuilding, although we need to move quickly by ensuring that people get the support they need and that the final number of 17.000 temporary displaced Albanians can return as soon as possible to a safe home.

"The purpose of the (donor conference) is to highlight the unbreakable link between the EU and Albania which justifies efforts to strengthen and enhance our integration efforts," the Albanian prime minister said.

He also said that some described last year's EU decision to delay the opening of negotiations with Northern Macedonia and Albania as the end of an era and advised those countries to plan reforms beyond the mantra of integration and enlargement.
