UNTIL THE ELECTION OF THE PATRIARCH
The Serbian Orthodox Church will be headed by Metropolitan Hrizostom of Dabro-Bosnia
After the death of Patriarch Irinej, Metropolitan Hrizostom of Dabro-Bosnia will be the head of the Serbian Orthodox Church until the new election.
According to the Constitution of the Serbian Orthodox Church (SOC), after the death of the patriarch, a new one will be elected in three months at the latest, and until then his place should be guarded by the oldest metropolitan, who is now Metropolitan of Dabro-Bosnia Hrizostom sitting in Sarajevo and currently in Belgrade.
Metropolitan Hrizostom could be at the helm of the Serbian Orthodox Church for much longer than prescribed, given that the coronavirus epidemic makes new voting difficult.
The new patriarch is elected by the bishops, i.e. the Council in which all metropolitans and bishops have an equal position, and every bishop who has been a bishop in a diocese for at least five years, has the right to be elected head of the Church.
