THE COURT IN THE HAGUE
Request for temporary release rejected
Despite the fact that the judge accepted the defense arguments that Veselji would not try to prevent justice if he was temporarily released, he explained that the arguments presented did not eliminate the risk of escape.
Judge Guillaume stated that he believed there was a risk that if Veselji was released, he would try to prevent justice and intimidate witnesses.
Attorney General Jack Smith had earlier stated why Veselj’s attorney Ben Emerson’s application should be rejected, saying he would face a life sentence for such acts.
The prosecution explained why you believe Veselji should remain in custody.
Veselji has been charged with war crimes and crimes against humanity, including murder and torture. There is a possibility of life imprisonment for a crime from prosecution. There is a constant risk of escape, which will increase once Veselji and his representatives find all the evidence we have against him – stated in the prosecution’s statement.
