EU must keep promises to the Western Balkans

Union has been told it must reassure western Balkan countries that their membership applications are on track or risk a migration crisis.

People from the Western Balkans could create the next EU migration crisis, if Europe lets enlargement promises fail, the EU's enlargement commissioner, OlivérVárhelyi, said Monday. "We must keep our promises to the Western Balkans. For me, this is one of the most important lessons of the Afghan situation," he told Hungarian newspaper Magyar Nemzet. The EU and Turkey also needed "a new kind of partnership," on migration, he said.

Oliver Varhelyi, the EU’s enlargement commissioner and a Hungarian, has highlighted growing fears in many central and eastern European countries about the consequences of continued delays to membership applications from the Balkans.

He warned of the “serious consequences of the lack of power and consistency in our geopolitical decisions” given the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan and a looming refugee crisis. Western Balkan countries — Albania, Serbia, Kosovo, Montenegro, Bosnia-Herzegovina and North Macedonia — are in the front line of the EU’s efforts to secure its borders and their co-operation is vital but prospects for their membership are receding.
