BRAJOVIC PORUCIO

Zero tolerance to violence

Montenegro must be a society with zero tolerance towards any type of violence, especially the one against women, said the President of the Assembly Ivan Brajovic.

At the 9th session of the "Women's Parliament" he reminded that activities within the 16 days of activism against violence against women symbolically begin on November 25, marking the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

Brajovic said there was no better place than parliament to discuss this issue and ways to improve prevention mechanisms, such as legislative framework, strengthening institutional capacity or raising awareness on the way it affects the society.

As he said, the elimination of violence must always be set in a broader context and include empowering of women of all ages, improving their economic status, and increasing their participation in politics and all social spheres.

Brajovic said that the representation of women at the state level is 23.5 percent, that the percentage at local level in more than half of the local communities significantly exceeds the percentage on the state level, and that in the number of municipalities the percentage exceeds the statutory norm of 30 percent.

The president of the Gender Equality Committee of Parliament of Montenegro, Nada Drobnjak said that in Montenegro there is still a high threshold of tolerance to violence against women.
