Dakic: We invest 80 million euros in defense

Defense Investment Plan has shown that Montenegro is committed to allocating defense spending to up to two percent of GDP, taking into account the overall burden on the Montenegrin budget, said Chief of the Montenegrin Army (VCG) Dragutin Dakic.

He said that Montenegro's Plan of Investing in Defense for the period from 2018 to 2024 was adopted by the Government at the proposal of the Ministry of Defense.

"The increase in the defense budget is primarily aimed at creating the conditions for further continuation of the reform of the national defense system, equipping and modernizing VCG, developing its capabilities and capacity and achieving the required level of interoperability, thus contributing to the development of the capabilities and capacity of the Alliance," Dakic said in an interview to agency Mina.

He said that 80.19 million euros was planned to be invested in defense this year, i.e. 1.67 percent of the estimated GDP.

"From 2020 to 2024, the percentage of defense spendingis projected at 1.73 percent in 2020, 1.81 percent in 2021, 1.88 percent in 2022, 1.94 percent in 2023, to 2 percent in 2024," Dakic explained.

He said that Montenegro, as the youngest NATO member, designated two infantry troops as declared units for NATO's capabilities targets.
