AFFIRMATIVE DECISION

Kotor and Durmitor stay at UNESCO list

The natural and cultural-historical area of Kotor and Durmitor National Park remain on the list of world cultural heritage in Montenegro, the Ministry of Culture announced.

This is the decision of this year's World Heritage Committee, held in Azerbaijan.

“The UNESCO World Heritage Committee, without debate, today adopted decisions relating to two World Heritage sites in Montenegro - the natural and cultural-historical area of Kotor and the Durmitor National Park," the statement said.

The Ministry of Culture states that the decision regarding the Natural and Cultural-Historical Area of Kotor is one of the most affirmative decisions of the Committee regarding the Kotor area.

"Especially since 2003, when the area was removed from the World Heritage List in Danger, where it had been enlisted after the devastating earthquake of 1979. However, from that moment on, the Committee commenced the warnings about the danger of sudden and uncontrolled urbanization and tourist pressure, which threaten preservation of the exceptional universal values that are the basis of the World Heritage List," the statement said.

The Committee's decisions have been stricter, as they recall, until the Decision of Istanbul 2016 has been made, after which a series of consultations with UNESCO had been made, which resulted in the adoption of the Action Plan for the implementation of this Decision by the Government of Montenegro.
