KALAC SAYS

Montenegro should be proud of the crisis effects

The banking sector responded to the coronavirus pandemic very well and in a timely manner, says banking ombudsman Halil Kalac. He believes that Montenegro can cope with the consequences of the crisis. The way out of the crisis he sees in the synergy of the banking sector with other sectors through a moratorium 2, the restructuring of existing loans and the approval of new loans, which must be more favorable.

Considering that this is a crisis that is bigger than the one in 2008, Kalac believes that we should do everything to prevent its consequences.

"One of the sectors that plays a very important role is banking. There are methodologies from the previous crisis, and what the banks should put a moratorium on credit obligations, restructure existing ones and approve new loans at somewhat more favorable terms," he added.

He claims that the banking sector reacted very well and in a timely manner.

"More than 62 thousand clients used the moratorium, in the amount of one billion and three hundred million euros, all those that wanted a moratorium got it. This is the first period and the effects are very significant. It was a period of 90 days when you had to deal with it, move on to crisis management and now move on to another period. The Central Bank did that well, " Kalac says.

According to him, we must all work to keep the banking sector in a positive sphere, because it affects everyone else.

"We must fight to keep as few bad loans as possible because they cause bad consequences," the ombudsman said.

He adds that the banks expect that the companies have already switched to crisis management, which means that they have made programs to get out of the crisis. In these programs, they will offer their solutions to their creditors.
