Refrain from jeopardizing friendly relations
EU calls for refraining from actions that could jeopardize friendly relations between Montenegro and Serbia, European Commission spokeswoman Ana Pisonero Hernandez said, commenting on yesterday's tweet from EU Enlargement Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi, who welcomed the Serbian government's decision to withdraw the expulsion of the Montenegrin ambassador and called on Montenegro to do the same.
When asked by TVCG whether the European Commission is aware of the wholehistorical context underlying the decision to expel the Serbian ambassador, Pisonero said that the European Commission had the opportunity to express its position yesterday, and that "the message was sent from their side".
Pisonero reiterated that respect for good neighborly relations and
regional cooperation is the cornerstone of the enlargement process, but also of the stabilization and association process.
"Montenegro and Serbia are making solid progress towards the EU. The Union calls for refraining from actions that could jeopardize mutual friendly ties,"Pisonero said.
He says maintaining dialogue and mutual trust is essential, especially among countries on the road to the EU.
Pisonero did not answer our question whether the European Commission called on Serbia to make the same move in 2008 when Belgrade decided to expelMontenegrin ambassador following Montenegro's decision to recognize independence of Kosovo.
