STATE LEADERSHIP

Wreath laid in Velika after 77 years

For the first time in 77 years the state leadership of Montenegro paid tribute to the victims of the crimes in Velika. Montenegro, as a responsible state, will also institutionally take a position regarding the grave crime in Velika, but also in Piva and all the execution sites that must be permanently engraved in the collective memory of Montenegrin citizens, the Government announced.

A delegation of the Government of Montenegro, led by the Minister of Economic Development Jakov Milatovic laid a wreath in honor of the victims of the crimes in Velika, who died on this day in 1944.

"Thus, for the first time in 77 years, the state leadership of Montenegro paid tribute to the innocent victims of crimes committed by the Nazi SS unit Prince Eugene, with the assistance of the Skenderbeg unit. On that occasion, hundreds of children, women and the elderly were killed, and over 300 homes were burned," the statement said.

Prime Minister Zdravko Krivokapic is officially absent from the country, which is why he appointed Minister Milatovic to lead the delegation of the Government of Montenegro. It also included the Minister of the Interior Sergej Sekulovic, the Secretary General of the Government of Montenegro Zana Prascevic Milacic, and the Advisor to the Prime Minister for Legal Affairs Ivan Sikmanovic.

"Montenegro, as a responsible state, will also institutionally take a position regarding the grave crime in Velika, but also in Piva and all the execution sites that must be permanently engraved in the collective memory of Montenegrin citizens. It is our debt to innocent victims but also to future generations so that Montenegro can find its peace!” it is stated in the announcement.

After the laying of the wreath, the bishops of Pakrac-Slavonia Jovan and Budimlje-Niksic Metodije served the memorial and the holy hierarch's liturgy. In addition to the delegation of the Government of Montenegro, the liturgy was attended by members of the families of the victims as well as representatives of the parliamentary majority in the Parliament of Montenegro.
