MEETING WITH DJUKANOVIC

Guterres: Preserve the unity of the country

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said after a meeting with President Milo Djukanovic that he was aware of the challenges Montenegro has recently faced. He expressed support for Djukanovic's personal efforts and the efforts of the citizens, with the best wishes that it would be possible to preserve the unity of the country.

Guterres, as announced by the office of the President of Montenegro, confirmed "excellent cooperation between Montenegro and the United Nations, and wished further success in the fight against Covid-19, climate change and achieving the goals of sustainable development."

Djukanovic, as it is stated, thanked for the reunion, the second in a relatively short time, which confirms, it is stated, the quality of relations between Montenegro and the UN.

"Holding the general debate instills the belief that multilateralism is alive and that the world will be able to respond to global challenges, which is extremely important given the overemphasis on doubts about multilateralism that have prevailed in recent years," Djukanovic said.

He thanked the Secretary General for his support, which has greatly contributed to the democratization of Montenegro and the achievement of key foreign policy results in previous years, NATO membership and progress in the negotiation process with the EU.

The officials exchanged views on the situation in the region. They agreed on the importance of the EU's role in the Western Balkans and the need for integration in the region. In this context, the benefits of strong EU support for pro-European forces in order to democratize and stabilize the region have been recognized.
