NATO in Syria only on the UN demand

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said in an interview published on Monday that NATO is not going to intervene in Syria because the UN has not asked it to.

"Even the Syrian opposition has not called on the international community to intervene militarily," he told the EU Observer, a Brussels-based website.

"It is my firm belief that any foreign military intervention would have unpredictable repercussions because Syrian society is very complicated, politically, ethnically, religiously and the regional context is very, very complex," Rasmussen noted.

"Foreign military intervention might not lead to a solution to the conflict, might even make things worse," he said. Rasmussen, however added that things might be different if Syria attacked its neighbor and NATO member Turkey.
