MEDITERANEAN BUSH BURNING

Greece faced with new wildfire

A new fire broke out in Attica. Nine Greek firefighters assisted by three fire trucks and a helicopter fight it.

The fire broke out in the eastern part of Attica in Nea Makri, where low growing vegetation is burning.

At the same time, Greek authorities have warned of an increased risk of outbreaks of fire in Attica, the southern part of Evia and some of the northern Aegean islands, the Kathimerini reported.

The secretariat of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for Civil Protection ordered all the services to be on standby.

As part of precautionary measures, vehicles are prohibited from passing through certain parks, forests, and areas where there is a risk of fire.

These are the municipalities of Maraton, Palini, Rafina-Pikermi and Spata-Artemida.

The ban is effective until seven o'clock on Thursday.

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said yesterday that thousands of illegal buildings would be demolished after it was estimated that illegally built structures were the cause of many people being blocked or trapped during a major wildfire on July 23rd.
