MIGRANTS HEADED TO EUROPE

Turkey will not stop refugees

Turkey will no longer stop Syrian refugees from reaching Europe, a senior Turkish official said.

Turkey is "no longer able to hold refugees" following a Syrian attack that killed 33 troops in Idlib, Omer Celik, a spokesman for Turkish President RecepTayyip Erdogan's ruling AKP party, said on Friday.

As a result of the attack, the (refugees) in Turkey are heading towards Europe, and those on Syrian territory are heading towards Turkey," Celik told CNN.

"Our refugee policy is the same as before, but we are now in a situation where we can no longer hold them."

President Tayyip Erdogan chaired an emergency meeting on the attack in Ankara overnight, while Defence Minister HulusiAkar and Turkish force commanders directed operations in Syria at the Turkish border, state-owned Anadolu news agency said.

Some one million civilians have been displaced near the Turkish border since December as Russia-backed Syrian government forces seized territory from Turkey-backed Syrian rebels, marking the worst humanitarian crisis in the nine-year war.
