ANSWER TO THE USA

Chinese journalists expelled from China

At least 13 US journalists are expected to be expelled from China, following new restrictions imposed by the US presidential administration on Chinese state media reporting from the US, the AP reports today.

China announced last night that it would deny accreditation to US journalists. Certainly, journalists will have to leave China since their visas have been issued with accreditations.

The decision applies to at least 13 reporters from three newspapers - the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post.

The Chinese government has stated that they will not be allowed to continue working as journalists in mainland China, Hong Kong or Macau.

It is in response to Washington's "scandalous" decision to reduce the number of Chinese allowed to work for five Chinese media in the United States, said a statement issued by the Chinese Ministry.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Tuesday urged Beijing to reconsider the move.

"I regret China's decision today to further foreclose the world's ability to conduct the free press operations that, frankly, would be really good for the Chinese people in these incredibly challenging global times, where more information, more transparency are what will save lives," Pompeo told reporters.

"This is unfortunate," Pompeo said. "I hope they will reconsider."
