IN GERMANY

A network of 30,000 pedophiles was discovered

German officials are investigating 30,000 suspects in connection with an online pedophile network.

The inquiry began last year when a 43-year-old man was arrested near Cologne for allegedly raping his daughter and sharing video of the abuse. That initial arrest led police to uncover a sprawling network of suspects - just over 70 of whom have since been identified - in Germany.

The state justice ministry said the extent of abuse taking place and being shared online was "deeply disturbing."

"I hadn't reckoned with the extent of child abuse on the internet," said state Justice Minister Peter Beisenbach.

Officers are investigating what could lead to around 30,000 unidentified leads. "We want to drag perpetrators and supporters of child abuse out of the anonymity of the internet," said the ministry.

Inquiries initially centred on the Cologne suburb of Bergisch Gladbach, where families were reportedly caught swapping pictures of their own children being abused.

The first offender, a 27-year-old soldier, was sentenced to 10 years in prison in May and placed in a psychiatric facility for an indefinite period.

The competent prosecutor said that the investigators will first urgently deal with cases where there are indications that sexual abuse is still ongoing, and then with all those who own and share child pornography.
