Swedes are increasingly in favor of joining NATO
In Sweden, support for the country's entry into NATO is growing, and the number of supporters has almost equalized with the supporters of preserving traditional military neutrality, the latest December public opinion poll showed.
In a poll published in the Swedish daily Dagens Niheter, 33 percent of participants voted for Sweden's entry into NATO, compared to 35 percent who said they were against, and almost the same percentage of respondents who were undecided, the Brussels portal EURACTIV reported.
For the sake of comparison, only five years ago, 50 percent of Swedes were against sending an application for NATO membership. The poll has been conducted for the last seven years and during that period opposition to Sweden's entry into NATO has gradually, but constantly, declined.
In December last year, the right-wing Swedish Democrats, Sweden's second-largest opposition party, joined the rest of the opposition - the Moderate Party, the Center Party, the Christian Democrats and the Liberals - in its stance on joining the North Atlantic Alliance.
With that move, the current parliamentary majority is open to the possibility of the country joining NATO.
