FORMER PRESIDENT
Sarkozy is awaiting a verdict in a corruption case
A verdict in the trial against former French President Nicolas Sarkozy on charges of corruption and trading in influence is due to be handed down today.
Sarkozy, who was president from 2007 to 2012, firmly denied all allegations during a ten-day trial late last year.
The former president, a 66-year-old politician, was suspected of illegally trying to get information from a senior judge in 2014 about the legal proceedings in which he was involved.
The prosecution requested four years in prison, two of which were suspended, for Sarkozy and two other co-defendants in the same case - former judge Gilbert Aziber and Sarkozy's former lawyer Thierry Herzog.
Prior to Sarkozy, whose trial is considered a precedent in France, another former president faced trial after leaving office. It was Jacques Chirac who was tried for embezzlement, not during his presidential term, but while he was the mayor of Paris.
"There was no collusion either in my head or in reality. I want to get rid of that stain," Sarkozy said during the trial and stressed that he "still had confidence" in his country's justice.
