BLINKEN

The Taliban promised to release people with travel documents

The Taliban have once again promised the Americans that they will let the Afghans who want to leave their country do so, said today the head of the American diplomacy Anthony Blinken during his visit to Qatar.

The Taliban, in power in Kabul, told the Americans that they would "let people with travel documents go free," Blinken said at a press conference in Doha.

The administration of President Joseph Biden is under pressure because of information about several hundred people, including Americans, who are waiting to leave Afghanistan at Mazar-i-Sharif Airport.

"The entire international community is waiting for the Taliban to honor this obligation," added Blinken, who is in Qatar with the US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin.

Qatar, for its part, announced that the airport in Kabul, closed since the last Americans left at the end of August, will soon reopen, without giving details.
