LAGARDE

Inflation will weaken over time

Supply disruptions and rising energy costs are expected to ease next year, which would mean significantly lower inflation, but the period of price normalization will last longer than expected, said the head of the European Central Bank (ECB), Christine Lagarde.

The ECB expects a sharp drop in inflation next year, after consumer prices rose by 4.1 percent in October, the strongest in 13 years, according to Eurostat estimates.

Lagarde persistently dismisses suggestions that monetary policy in the eurozone should be tightened, repeating the ECB's message that the conditions for raising interest rates will probably not be met next year, because inflation is expected to fall below the planned two percent after that, Hina reports.

In September, the ECB forecast that inflation in the eurozone would slide to an average of 1.7 percent next year, and to 1.5 percent in 2023.

The European Commission (EC) estimated in the autumn forecasts, published last week, that it will amount to 2.2 percent next year, and will slip to 1.4 percent in 2023.

"We still expect inflation to weaken next year, but it will take more time than originally expected," Lagarde said in a speech to the European Parliament's (EP) economic policy committee on Monday.
