"I see no reason for not signing the Basic Agreement"

After the announcement of the Patriarch of the Serbian Orthodox Church, Porfirijethat the Basic Agreement with Montenegro could be signed soon and on the other hand the position of Bishop of BackaIrinejBulovic who thinks it wouldn’t while ZdravkoKrivokapic is the Prime minister head, Metropolitan of Montenegro and the Littoral Joanikije, in an interview with RTV Niksic says he sees no reason why the Basic Agreement should not be signed.

‘’As far as I am concerned, this initiative will last until the Basic Agreement between the Serbian Orthodox Church and the Government of Montenegro is signed. I cannot talk about the deadlines when the agreement could be signed. What is important is that the church lives with and without agreement, but I repeat it is a civilizational achievement and I see no reason why this initiative should be terminated and why the Basic Agreement would not be signed,“Joanikijesaid.

In legal terms, he adds, the document is important.

"It is certain that our position would be even better defined, because the state and the church would adopt a joint document on mutual respect and division of competencies in the same manner it is regulated with the Roman Catholic Church. Every civilized state needs that," the metropolitan added.

Answering the questions about the current relationship between the current government in Montenegro and the Metropolitanate of Montenegro and the Littoral, the Metropolitan says that both have their obligations and competencies.

"We do not want to interfere in the affairs of the Government. We have correct cooperation. We see shortcomings and problems in the current government; we do not want to contribute to the deepening of the existing political crisis in Montenegro. Let politicians solve their problems, let them find a solution," Joanikije concluded.
