NORTH MITROVICA

A teenager stabbed near the Ibar Bridge

A 17-year-old boy of Serbian nationality has been stabbed after a fight between a group of Serbs and Albanians near the main bridge of Ibar which divides the town of Mitrovica into the mostly Serb north and the mostly Albanian southern part.

The brawl happened at the northern side of the Ibar Bridge. According to witnesses the Serb youngster was involved in a fight with a group of Albanian youngsters. During the clash the Serbian youngster was stabbed with a knife and the group of Albanians escaped to the southern part of the town.

Kosovo’s outgoing Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj condemned the incident and called on rule of law authorities to solve the case as soon as possible and bring those responsible before justice. “The incident is an isolated case and should not threaten peace and stability in the country,” Haradinaj said.

Serbian president, Aleksandar Vucic, said the incident was ethically motivated.

“The Iber Bridge should not be open to traffic,” he said.

Vucic said the aim of Albanians is to take over control of Mitrovica North inhabited by Serbs.

But Kosovo’s former Parliament Speaker Kadri Veseli has reacted to Vucic’s statement saying that Serbian president is exploiting this incident for internal consumption in Serbia and his statements are to the detriment of Serbs in Kosovo.

“Vucic’s statement is aimed at threatening security in Kosovo and harming regional stability,” Veseli said in a Facebook post. He called on Belgrade officials to give up provocations and control over Serbs in Kosovo.
