AFTER THE COALITION SPLIT

In Italy, uncertainty following a sudden crisis in government

Matteo Salvini, Italy’s deputy prime minister and the leader of the far-right League party, has called for a snap election, urging the prime minister to reconvene parliament to confirm that the coalition government is no longer viable.

The dramatic move on Thursday came after months of fighting between the League and its coalition partners, the anti-establishment Five Star Movement (M5S).

"We will immediately go to Parliament to announce that there is no majority anymore and to request a vote," Salvini said last night after a series of political leaders' meetings.

Salvini's sudden statement sparked dissatisfaction with his coalition partner, the vice-president of the Italian government and the leader of the Five Star Movement, Luigi Di Maio, who replied that his movement was not afraid of new elections.

"We are ready, we don't care in the least about occupying government posts and we never have."  Di Mayo said accusing Salvini, who is highly quoted in opinion polls, of playing with Italy, and added that sooner or later the Italians would turn against him.
