BELGRADE COURT

100 years of prison for Curuvija’s murder

The Special Court in Belgrade has found four former members of State Security (DB) guilty for the 1999 murder of publisher and journalist Slavko Curuvija, reports the N1.

The accused Radomir Markovic and Milan Radonjic were sentenced to 30 years in prison. Miroslav Kurak and Ratko Romic received 20 years each.

Markovic was the head of the DB at the time of the murder, Radonjic headed the Belgrade Center, where Romic served, as well as Kurak, who is now at large.

The court ruled that Markovic ordered Radonjic to organize the killing and that Romic and Kurak were ordered to commit it but that the person who fired the gun that killed Curuvija had not been identified during the trial.

Kurak was sentenced in absentia and Markovic is already serving a 40 year sentence for the murder of opposition activists and the abduction and murder of former Serbian President Ivan Stambolic.

The prosecution had requested the maximum sentences of 40 years for all four defendants while defence lawyers argued that they should be freed because their guilt had not been proven.

Radomir Markovic said that the proceedings were initiated in order to attribute all the bad things that happened at that time to the DB and then president of the state, Slobodan Milosevic.
